Courtenay Bruce is an associate professor and the associate chief experience officer for the Houston Methodist system. She is a lawyer and a trained mediator and worked for 10 years mediating life sustaining treatment disputes between families, patients, and clinicians in ICUs at the Cleveland Clinic and Houston Methodist, having personally mediated 4,500 family meetings. She completed a two-year fellowship in advanced medical ethics at Cleveland Clinic. She is the first author on 75 papers on clinician-patient communication, and has served as investigator or consultant on 4 federally funded grants on communication from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
